Monday Night Youth Group.
Th
is group meet on a weekly basis and draws young people from across the Parish, though predominantly from St John’s Church.  These evening’s are split in half, the first half being structured learning and teaching, the second an opportunity to socialise.  This is where young people are offered the opportunity to explore different aspects of their faith, questioning and considering contemporary issues.  It is as important to us that these sessions equip young people to live as Christians in the world as it is to facilitate their learning and knowledge of the Christian faiths scripture and doctrine.  These core aims are reflected in the areas we cover, as we seek to work from the young people’s needs and wants, involving and including them in as much of the programme development as is possible.  Recently, we have looked in detail at the book of James as we seek to consider what is required of us when living a Christian life, and we have spent the last term following ‘Youth Alpha’, which has served as a refreshment on Christian Basics for the young people and has equipped them to support the delivery of this in their schools, and if it is offered again in the Parish.  Individual spiritual growth and development is viewed as equally important as corporate and numerical growth and consequently we seek to offer one-to-one support where necessary.  As a youth work team we are predominantly relational and seek to holistically encourage the young people in all aspects of their lives.  The young people have social time immediately after the structured session and this builds relationships between themselves and the leaders. Discover (Sunday Group).
This group meets on a weekly basis and numbers vary from approximately 15 to 24.  This group caters for school year nine to thirteen (14-18) and is seen as an opportunity for the young people to develop skills and understanding that will serve them outside of the church context, considering issues that are of a worldly interest.  In the Autumn of 2009 the numbers in this group necessitated a 'split' for teaching - a fantastic development in the youth ministry.  The format of these sessions is significantly shorter and there is an emphasis on discussion with the potential to ask questions and consider issues facing young people.  The young people themselves direct the topics covered at these sessions.  Recently the group have considered the Kingdom of God and what this means for the world, science and religion and have reflected on and discussed a number of Rob Bell’s
Nooma DVD’s, an interactive format that has been tremendously effective and popular.  (For more information, please contact Dan Crouch, Youth Worker, ddcrouch@hotmail.com 07890569534).

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is a group for young people in school years 12 & 13 (or in employment after GCSE's) and seeks to provide a safe social space for young people to get deeper into God's word, seeing it's practical influence on their lives and the situations they experience, helping them to apply it themselves.  This group emerged at the direction of the young people themselves and seeks at all times to be directed by them.  The group was established in the Autumn of 2009 and meets on the third and fourth Wednesday's of each month, between 6pm and 7.30pm.

University Preparation Group

The group does what it says on the tin!  Another small group to emerge in the Autumn of 2009 this gathering seeks to prepare young people for University and the challenges this brings. (For more information see the 'Students' sub-section of this website).

Youth Work with the Choir

An often overlooked and yet incredibly important and integral aspect of the youth ministry in the Parish is work with the Choir. The young people from the choir have their own teaching during the 9.30am service at which the choir sing, which is open to all children and young people that attend this service. The choir also have a short youth club during their practice on a Friday and occasionally meet outside of choir for social activities. (For more information, please contact Roger Peach, Music Director, or Dan Crouch, Youth Worker)
